5 STeps: How to Clean Double Hung Windows
Follow the steps below or watch our quick video to learn how to clean your double-hung windows.
Step 1
Ensure the window lock is in the unlocked position.
Step 2
Raise open the bottom sash a few inches. (This is the step of using double hung tilt in windows that many people forget!)
Step 3
Find the tilt latches on either side of the top rail and squeeze them toward each other. This will release the sash from the window frame so you can gently lean the tilt–in window sash inward.
Step 4
Repeat steps 1-3 with the top sash. Remember to first lower the top sash down a few inches before releasing the tilt latches. NOTE: the bottom sash MUST be opened before the top sash.
Step 5
With both sashes open, remove the window screen, brush away any debris, then wipe down the exterior glass with glass cleaner or a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar. When finished, replace the top sash first by tilting it up and pushing until it snaps into the frame. Then, fully raise it to close the sash. Repeat with the bottom sash.
NOTE: If the window sashes do not close properly, they may need to be squared-up in the frame. Tilt the sash back toward you and ensure the bottom corners of each sash are level in the frame, then try raising the sashes into place again.
